Generalized gradient vector flow external forces for active contours

چکیده
Active contours, or snakes, are used extensively in computer vision and image processing applications, particularly to locate object boundaries. A new type of external force for active contours, called gradient vector flow (GVF) was introduced recently to address problems associated with initialization and poor convergence to boundary concavities. GVF is computed as a diffusion of the gradient vectors of a gray-level or binary edge map derived from the image. In this paper, we generalize the GVF formulation to include two spatially varying weighting functions. This improves active contour convergence to long, thin boundary indentations, while maintaining other desirable properties of GVF, such as an extended capture range. The original GVF is a special case of this new generalized GVF (GGVF) model. An error analysis for active contour results on simulated test images is also presented. ( 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. Comparison of Three Different Image Forces for Active Contours on Abdominal Image Boundary Detection
Active contour, or snake, is an energy minimizing spline that is useful in image boundary detection. Active contours are stimulated by internal forces, image forces and external forces which maintain the shape of the contours while attract the contours to some desired features, usually edges. Problems in implementing active contours such as convergence and initialization have motivated research...

Snakes, or active contours, are used extensively in computer vision and image processing applications, particularly to locate object boundaries. Problems associated with initialization and poor convergence to concave boundaries, however, have limited their utility. This paper develops a new external force for active contours, largely solving both problems. This external force, which we call gra...
متن کاملActive Contours with Weighted External Forces for Medical Image Segmentation
Parametric active contours have been widely used for image segmentation. However, high noise levels and weak edges are the most acute issues that hinder their performance, particularly in medical images. In order to overcome these issues, we propose an external force that weights the gradient vector flow (GVF) field and balloon forces according to local image features. We also propose a mechani...

متن کاملActive contours with neighborhood-extending and noise-smoothing gradient vector flow external force
We propose a novel external force for active contours, which we call neighborhood-extending and noise-smoothing gradient vector flow (NNGVF). The proposed NNGVF snake expresses the gradient vector flow (GVF) as a convolution with a neighborhood-extending Laplacian operator augmented by a noise-smoothing mask. We find that the NNGVF snake provides better segmentation than the GVF snake in terms ...
